In the Engineering team in the west of Sweden, we have many exciting assignments ongoing, one of which is in the Construction Tools Industry. Our colleague Marin, is currently working as a Lead Engineer. We spoke with him to gain insights into the technical challenges he is tackling. The assignment is a complex task that demands both technical expertise and innovative thinking.

What kind of project are you currently working on?

In this project we are working on a conventional 2-stroke engine. Many handheld construction machines and tools still rely on these. They’ve been around for over a century, and their simplicity and impressive power-to-weight ratio make them a popular choice on job sites. But nevertheless these engines are still getting innovated on and improved to reduce their environmental impact.

What is your role in the assignment?

It’s pretty dynamic and exciting. I’m involved in the design and development of components for construction tools, collaborating with various stakeholders and suppliers, and of course, documenting everything along the way.

What are the technical challenges that you are facing together with your team on sight?

We do a lot of prototype testing, which can be a rollercoaster ride. Sometimes, we encounter unexpected issues that require us to go back to the drawing board. It’s all about finding that sweet spot between hitting our engine targets and managing practical constraints like time and budget. It can be challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding!

What opportunities do you see within improving the sustainability in construction tools?

Every little innovation, whether it’s in traditional or electric machines, plays a part in creating a cleaner environment. The project I’m working on aims to make traditional engines more efficient and less polluting. This is crucial as we transition to electric options. By embracing both paths, we’re making strides toward a greener construction landscape, one improvement at a time.
